The Discovery Atelier is a bilingual German-English preschool opening in Cornelius, NC in 2027 — serving families across the Lake Norman area with an intimate, play-based learning experience unlike anything else in the region.
Most preschools in the Lake Norman area — from KinderCare to Primrose — run groups of 20 to 30 children, follow standardized curricula, and measure success through checkboxes. The Discovery Atelier was built as a deliberate alternative to this model.
We believe children ages 3–5 learn best through genuine exploration, native language immersion, and educators who know their names, their strengths, and the things that make them light up. That level of individual attention requires small groups — and a different philosophy entirely.
Our bilingual German-English program combines Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf principles into a coherent, play-based learning environment — delivered in both languages from day one. No prior German experience is required for families or children.
Located in Cornelius, NC, The Discovery Atelier is easily accessible for families throughout the Lake Norman community. Whether you live in Davidson to the north, Huntersville to the south, or Mooresville to the east — we're your neighborhood bilingual preschool.
Families from Denver, NC, Statesville, and the greater Charlotte metro area are also welcome. Contact us to discuss commute options and scheduling.
Every preschool in the Lake Norman area claims to be "different." Here is what actually sets The Discovery Atelier apart — in concrete terms.
Children between ages 3 and 5 are in the most powerful language acquisition window of their lives. Our native German-speaking educators don't teach German as a subject — they live it alongside the children. Stories, outdoor time, art projects, and lunch happen in German, interwoven with English throughout the day. Research shows this immersion approach produces lasting bilingualism more effectively than any structured language curriculum.
Inspired by the Reggio Emilia tradition, our learning environments are designed as "ateliers" — studios where children investigate, create, and discover. Materials are carefully selected to invite open-ended exploration. There are no worksheets. There are no flashcard drills. Instead, children build mathematical thinking through block play, develop literacy through storytelling, and practice scientific observation by caring for plants, water, and living things. The work looks like play — because it is. And that is exactly the point.
Most licensed preschools in North Carolina permit 20 or more children per educator. We cap enrollment at 10 children per day — not because regulations require it, but because we believe extraordinary education is impossible at scale. In a group of 10, every educator knows the child who needs five minutes of quiet before transitions. They know who lights up for mud play and who needs more time with books. They adapt daily, not quarterly. This is the Lake Norman preschool experience we would want for our own children.
Yes. The Discovery Atelier is the Lake Norman area's only bilingual German-English Montessori preschool. We're located in Cornelius and serve families from Davidson, Huntersville, Mooresville, and the greater Charlotte metro.
Not at all. Our program is specifically designed for English-speaking families with zero German background. The immersion environment is crafted so that children absorb German naturally — through songs, routines, stories, and play. Most of our founding families are English-only households.
Franchise preschools serve 20–30 children per room and follow corporate-mandated curricula. The Discovery Atelier caps enrollment at 10 children per day, offers native German immersion, and uses Montessori, Reggio, and Waldorf methods — tailored individually to each child. There is no comparable program within 50 miles.
